Burning wood efficiently

Wood must be dry enough to burn efficiently. If you buy wood from a firewood cutter, you can be fairly sure the supply has been seasoned, which means it sat drying for one year. But if you scavenge wood, be sure that any green wood you collect sits for a season to dry out. Green wood doesn’t look literally green, but some species do have a green tinge in the pulp. When you split a green log, the inside is supple. Green wood contains 40 to 70 percent moisture, says Ashford, Connecticut, wood expert John Bartok, a retired engineer from the University of Connecticut Cooperative Extension Center. Seasoned firewood is about 20 percent moisture. Burning green wood won’t produce as much heat as burning seasoned wood. Burning green wood greatly diminishes the stove’s efficiency. The stove can’t get as hot, and creosote can build up in the inside, creating a fire hazard in the chimney.14
